The Seven Stars

Pubs - London   WC2A2JB

The Seven Stars is one of the few London buildings to survive the Great Fire of 1666. With origins tracing back to 1602, it has a credible claim as the oldest surviving pub in London. Low ceilings, exposed ancient beams, and a narrow Elizabethan staircase reveal the building's Tudor bones. The cozy venue serves up classic London hospitality with its decorative Victorian bar, resident cat, cask ales, and pub grub. When improvements were made in 2001, the original hewn beams, reed insulation, and timber joinery uncovered further verified the 17th century origins. The Seven Stars remains a rare surviving relic of Elizabethan London.

Unmistakably ancient roof beams are exposed in the plaster of the sloping north wall in the upstairs kitchen. The floorboards of the first-floor passageway and the office are very old oak. Datable Tudor construction is visibly apparent in the cellar view underneath the ground to first-floor stair. The most telling sign of the pub's late Elizabethan date is the characteristic historical formation of the narrow and steep stair with winder treads, from the bar to the first floor.
