The Pineapple
Pubs - London NW52NX
The Pineapple is a historic pub in North London built in the 1860s amidst the railway expansion that transformed much of Kentish Town's bucolic scenery into bustling suburbs. Threatened with closure in the early 2000s, community backlash led to its Grade-II heritage listing, saving a beloved neighbourhood spot.
Today, the cozy pub maintains its vintage charm while staying current with craft beers on tap and a Thai food menu. Labour leader Keir Starmer has even declared The Pineapple the "best pub in Britain." Out back, a compact beer garden provides additional seating.
The pub's pineapple name likely stemmed from the fruit's reputation at the time as an ultraluxurious status symbol, displayed by the wealthy at dinner parties. Though writer George Orwell lived nearby in the 1930s, historical records suggest his drinking occurred at a different local, The Duke of Cambridge.
Through the dedicated patronage of longtime regulars and newcomers alike, The Pineapple continues thriving as both a community fixture and a transportive glimpse into Victorian-era London
